Access to SSH Intel obliges you to cite nothing. When you do cite us, here is the citation, stated once and completely. It matches the press kit at /press/kit, and every search answer carries a citation line.
The attribution wording
On first mention, the source is "SSH Intel, by Stolen Stuff Hawaii"; after that, "SSH Intel". On screen, or wherever space is short: Source: Stolen Stuff Hawaii (License section 7 accepts either form). On the web, a link to sshintel.com is ideal but not required.
Say which record you are quoting
Official figures are Honolulu Police Department records, cited as HPD records via SSH Intel: the officialness belongs to the source, and we are a view of that record, never "the official record" itself. Community figures are community reports to Stolen Stuff Hawaii: unverified resident submissions, a separate signal. The two are never summed, and the brief keeps them in separate columns for exactly this reason.
The provisional-number rule
The latest complete month is provisional for about 30 days while HPD records settle, and every surface says so. Quote it as provisional ("preliminary figures show...") or use the prior, settled month. If a figure you quoted has moved and you want to know why, ask press@stolenstuffhawaii.com.
What may run verbatim
The quotable lines in the Monthly Press Brief are written to be lifted word for word with the attribution shown. If you shorten a line, keep the counts with the percentage: a percent without its counts misleads on small numbers, which is why we never publish one without the other.
What we will not support
Our data describes what was recorded. It does not support a "most dangerous", "safest", or ranked-places framing, and if you ask the product for one it will decline and say why. A story built on our figures can say what was recorded, where, and how that compares with the record so far; the verdicts stay out.
Corrections and questions
Write to press@stolenstuffhawaii.com: a human reads it, and corrections take priority. Include the figure, the area, and the period, and we will trace it to its source. Our methodology is public at how every number is measured, and the data-quality record at how good the data is.
