📋 Recorded: the official HPD record

Recorded is the official one: crime records published by the Honolulu Police Department as open data. It is the closest thing to "the area incident record," and it is what most people mean by "crime here."

What it is, and when it begins

Every entry is an offense HPD logged into its public system. Coverage begins August 2025. We show it by category, area, and time, with per-capita rates on the daytime-population denominator and 95% confidence bands.

What it can tell you

What offenses were officially recorded, how the mix breaks down, how a category moved over recent months, and how an area's rate compares to the Oahu average. It is the most authoritative of the signals because it comes from the official source.

What it cannot tell you

It cannot show crime that was never reported or recorded (the "dark figure"), which is exactly why we keep Reported as a second, independent lens. The most recent month is provisional and still settling. And a count is never a safety verdict: a higher number can simply mean more daytime visitors or more reporting.
