Reading a report
Every part of an area report, and how to read the numbers honestly.
The tools
Search, Explore, Compare, Portfolio, and the time machine. With examples you can launch.
- Using Search: ask a questionType a plain question and get a short, sourced answer. Example queries, how the reading works, and why it sometimes declines.
- Using Explore: every signal at onceType a place and see a count from every public feed side by side: crime, community, traffic, dispatch, and weather.
- Using Compare: two areas side by sidePut 2 to 4 areas next to each other for one month, on the same per-capita basis, with confidence bands.

The signals in depth
One article per signal: what it is, when its record begins, and what it can and cannot tell you.
- Recorded: the official HPD recordHonolulu Police Department open-data crime records. The area incident record, its coverage, and what it can and cannot tell you.
- Reported: the community recordUnverified community submissions to the Stolen Stuff Hawaii network. A second, independent lens that catches what the official record misses.
- Noticed: community attention (the 9-year moat)Public attention across the SSH network since 2017. An audience measure, not an incident count, and the signal no competitor has.
- Sought: search demand (beta)What people typed into the public SSH search site. A measure of interest and worry, not of incidence.
- Dispatch: calls for serviceWhat HPD was dispatched to respond to. A faster, broader live pulse than the settled monthly record, but calls, not confirmed crimes.
- Traffic: collisions and incidentsHPD traffic incidents and collisions by area and time. A separate operational signal, on its own axis.

FAQ & tech support
The questions people actually ask, and how to reach a human.
- Why did my search decline?Two harmless reasons: too few records to show safely (under 5), or a question that asks for a ranking, verdict, or forecast.
- Why did the number change, or why is last month low?Recent months are provisional and settle over about a month. A fresh month reads "so far," not "final."
